His sleep, however, was measured and divided: he slept for a third of the night, but never during the day. He had a corridor where, throughout the entire half of the day, he walked, weighed down with drowsiness, forcing his mind to contemplate visions that were revealed to him. At night, when he had already slept for a third of the night, he would spend the remaining part of the night walking through the corridor, meditating and praying, driving sleep away from himself, and compelling his mind to focus on the visions of the Scriptures. Thus, he became a man of the purest mind and of wisdom, knowledge, and discernment, and he was regarded as worthy of the grace of discretion, distinguishing the works of demons. In the holy Scriptures and the orthodoxy of the Catholic Church, he was eloquent and learned, for his knowledge and his chosen mind are attested to by the books he wrote. He wrote three books: one about the monks of monasteries, another about the monks who dwelled in the cells of his desert, and another about the presbyters of God, to make them vigilant in their holy place. These three books all taught a good life, ordered understanding, and visions in accordance with the orthodox traditions of the Church. For this was his custom.
