It is said that the ascetic Apa Pihor, a disciple of Abba Antony, once came to him, bringing bread and two olives that he had taken with him to eat. Abba Pambo said to him: “What are these, Pihor?” Apa Pihor replied: “I have decided to remain with you for a day, and I brought these few necessities with me.” The elder understood that Pihor had bound himself by a vow not to eat another man’s bread. After some time, wishing to teach him without acting according to his own will while among the elders, Pamo rose and went to Apa Pihor. Before he reached him, he had moistened his bread and carried two jars of water with him. Apa Pihor said to him: “What are these, Pambo?” Pambo replied: “Behold, I have brought my bread and water with me. To avoid causing you any trouble, I moistened my bread before coming to you.” Thus Apa Pambo did this to teach him silently.
