But since Evagrius truly feared God, he did not sin with her, for the woman was married, and he guarded his own conscience, because the woman's husband was a man of great and most honorable lineage. Evagrius thought about his immunity to disgrace, about sin, judgment, and the joy with which heretics rejoiced after being confounded by him. He therefore prayed to God, ceaselessly imploring Him to aid him in his struggle against his passions in the battle imposed upon him. When the woman’s desire clung to him and persisted until he might succumb, he wished to flee her, but he could not find the strength. For his thoughts, like those of a child, were bound by pleasure. But divine mercy did not delay in seizing him; the grace of his prayers and supplications quickly came to him and gave him strength through a vision. Before anything evil happened with the woman, the Lord sent angels to him in a nighttime vision, dressed in splendid garments like the guards of an eparch. They seized him and dragged him away like one being led to judgment. They bound him, as with thieves, in a prison with other criminals, placing collars and shackles on him, though he knew not why they had taken him or what the cause was. He then realized that this was happening to him because he had considered, even in thought, standing before the eparch—the husband of the woman.
